HISTORY Arenal Volcano (1657 mt) is a Tall Conical Volcano (10.5N, 84.7W), located in Alajuela, inside the Volcano Arenal National Park. It is estimated to be around 4,000 years old and sits between the town of La Fortuna and Nuevo Arenal with the man made Lake Arenal at its feet. In June 29th 1968 ended his last period of activities, since then it presents constant gas emissions and water vapors, with some explosions of piroclastic materials y sometimes strong booms. Before 1968, was in doubt even if it was a volcano, because it never gave any signal of volcanic activities. It was knew as “Cerro Arenal” (Arenal Hill) until 1968, when a big explosion destroyed the cities of Tabacon and Pueblo Nuevo. Arenal is the most active and youngest volcano in Costa Rica and is said to be the 3rd most active in the world and has been recorded active since the 19th century.
